Crossing

2017

Sculpture Installation + Video Projection + Motion Sensors + Microcontroller + Light

Engaging a dichotomous narrative, found objects, technology, and construction materials to reconstruct memories of the railroad crossing in Sackville, New Brunswick. Projections of tall grass and the sound of chirping birds are disrupted by the blasting horn of a passing train, and the flashing lights of a railroad crossing. The viewer’s presence activates a series of motion sensors, shifting the environment between two states. An arduino microcontroller syncs a red flashing light in the center of the installation to the same motion sensors controlling the projections.

This work was produced in my final year of undergraduate study, for the group exhibition The Last Gairdners, at the Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, NB, 2017.
